Garden Snails

Garden Snails

Today, Locryn spotted a common snail in our vegetable garden. To be honest, snails are pretty cool to watch. Slowly and meticulously moving along, they can consume rotting plant material like leaf litter. They are a good food source for snakes, birds, lizards, and mammals.

But, they also love to eat all your wonderful vegetable plant leaves and can possibly kill your plants in the process.

Some natural ways to control snails in your garden are (1) make your garden snake friendly. Do you remember the garter snake Locryn met earlier? They help keep snail populations down! (2) lay down grit in the form of diatomaceous earth or crushed eggshells. It will make the ground uncomfortable for the snail to travel on. (3) Set out traps. If you lay out pans of beer, the snails will be attracted to it and drown in the beer.

This little snail was relocated to the woods behind our house- away from our vegetable garden.
